"Adopt" a Family for the Holidays

What: Join up with family or friends to "adopt" a family for the December holidays. Many families are struggling and can’t afford to buy gifts for their children at holiday time without giving up basic necessities. It’s supposed to be a time of joy but it can put a lot of stress on families.

How:

  • Agencies who have this program will post profiles with information about the family members and a wishlist of wants and needs for each family member.

  • Choose a family based on the size, location, or story.

  • Shop, wrap, and deliver the gifts. Some organizations let you deliver the presents right to the families house so you can meet them and share in their joy. Or you can deliver them to the caseworker.

Where: Touch A Heart Foundation and Neighbors 4 Neighbors both have these programs. Touch A Heart will pay for the "adoptions" for High School kids needing community service hours if they have extra families that haven’t been adopted.

Sometimes you can form a close bond with a family as my family did and we have stayed in contact for 5 years. We just went to the wedding of the oldest son!

About SASHA

IMG_1198.JPG

I am currently a High School Student.  Since I was in 5th grade, I have done a lot of community service geared towards helping kids through my family’s non-profit. I have participated in and led many different types of events and programs. Friends and classmates have often asked me for ideas about where to volunteer or how to run a community service program. I thought it would be useful to put my experiences and suggestions all in one place so people can find things that interest them.

Any questions?
