What: One of my favorite projects is Birthday in a Bag. Having a festive celebration is something that most people take for granted. When children enter the foster care system their birthdays can get overlooked. And low-income families who are living paycheck-to-paycheck can’t spend the money on celebrations.

This is an easy project for any age children to help assemble and decorate the bags.

How:

  • Do a collection of birthday supplies or buy them at the dollar store.

    • items you can include: cake mix, frosting, candles, festive birthday plates, napkins, party hats, a crown, stuffed animals, and other birthday gift items

  • Decorate white kraft bags to hold the items.

  • Make a birthday card to put in the bag.

  • Put the whole kraft bag inside a drawstring backpack so the items stay put in transport and when they are stored at the organization you are donating them to.

Where: Foster group homes such as SOS Children’s Villages and Place of Hope

About SASHA

IMG_1198.JPG

I am currently a High School Student.  Since I was in 5th grade, I have done a lot of community service geared towards helping kids through my family’s non-profit. I have participated in and led many different types of events and programs. Friends and classmates have often asked me for ideas about where to volunteer or how to run a community service program. I thought it would be useful to put my experiences and suggestions all in one place so people can find things that interest them.

Any questions?
