Sponsor a Child for Back to School

What: Help a child start off the new school year with the correct school supplies to feel confident going back to school.

How:

  • Shop for the supplies at places with the best sales like Walmart. If you can, wait for tax-free week in August. The Dollar Tree also has inexpensive school supplies.

  • Add fun extras like a reusable water bottle, and some necessities like hygiene items (especially for teens) and socks and underwear and a new outfit for school if you are given their size.

  • If you have been matched up with a specific child make sure you label your bag(s). Hole punch and attach (with string or ribbon) an index card (or similar) to the outside of the backpack with your child’s name, age, gender and agency info on one side and your name on the other side.

  • Overflow: Try to put all supplies in the backpack you purchase. For anything that does not fit, put the excess items in a grocery bag with another labeled index card. Write “1 of 2” and “2 of 2” on the index cards if you need to use more than one bag.

Where: Find a local charity like Touch A Heart Foundation, Harvest Drive Florida, Big Brothers Big Sisters Broward, and Heather’s Volunteer Opportunities that do back-to-school backpack drives

Touch A Heart and Harvest Drive Florida also did backpack and school supplies assembly events pre-Covid. You can see if they bring them back.
