What: 80% of child care centers serving low-income children lack age-appropriate books and 60% of underprivileged children do not own a single book.

How:

  • Determine what type of books you want to collect and what age group you are targeting.

  • Ask your friends to clean off their book shelves.

  • Set up a drop off location(s). You can ask local stores or restaurants if they want to drive traffic to their establishment. Give them an XL tall cardboard box for the collection with plenty of signage on it.

Where: Donate to a local Title 1 School or directly to a teacher for their classroom. Elementary school books are the most needed in schools because K-5 teachers have classrooms where the children borrow the books.

You can ask local shelters if they have a library for children and see if they are in need of higher level reading books. Chapman Partnership accepts books and educational toys for their Family Resource Center.

OPTIONAL: We made fun and inspirational bookmarks to be donated with the books.

About SASHA

IMG_1198.JPG

I am currently a High School Student.  Since I was in 5th grade, I have done a lot of community service geared towards helping kids through my family’s non-profit. I have participated in and led many different types of events and programs. Friends and classmates have often asked me for ideas about where to volunteer or how to run a community service program. I thought it would be useful to put my experiences and suggestions all in one place so people can find things that interest them.

Any questions?
